The Mobile Advisory Council (MAC) is an advocacy group for mobile computing standards and designers. The MAC creates cross-industry recommendations which focus on mobile-savvy development principles. These recommendations are presented to the industry organizations and standards bodies whose work affects the mobile industry.
Most computer and communications industry standards are an outgrowth of desktop designs, which do not always accommodate the unique needs of the mobile environment and users. To foster mobile market momentum and encourage mobile-appropriate design efforts, the specific needs of mobile users must be addressed early in the standards creation and system design process. The MAC provides a forum for mobile industry vendors to promote mobile-friendly designs and coordinate industry-wide mobile efforts. Feel free to check out an introductory presentation on the MAC as well as our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page.
The Mobile Advisory Council (MAC) fosters the growth of the mobile industry by ensuring that computing and communications standards are mobile-friendly.
Identify mobile challenges and opportunities in computing and communications.
Define and publish cross-industry recommendations for addressing these identified mobile challenges.
Through these efforts the MAC makes the unique requirements of mobile computing widely understood, documented and implemented in industry initiatives.
The MAC was formed in February 1998 by 3Com and Compaq. Initial MAC efforts focused on coordinating industry mobile input to PC99. Since this early effort, the MAC has matured into an open consortium, operating as a non-profit organization which includes over 20 companies. Our current efforts focus on encouraging mobile-friendly design within standards or technologies such as the PC2001 Hardware Design Guide, Wireless Communications (Bluetooth & 802.11), Power Management (ACPI), Software Docking Architecture, Legacy Free Mobile PC and other industry standards.
